BEIJING: Southern China will again face serious power shortages in 2008, a problem that has plagued the booming economic region for years, the media reported on Friday.

Power consumption in Guangdong province for the year is forecast to rise by 13 per cent from 2007.

Demand during summer, the peak period, is projected to expand by around 7.5 million kilowatts, leaving an estimated shortfall of 6.5 million kilowatts, the report said.

The shortages could be even worse if problems occur, such as generator malfunctions or fuel shortages, it added, citing network operator the China Southern Power Grid Corporation.

As part of efforts to address the imbalance, the province will try to build more electricity generators and buy more power from neighbouring Hong Kong and China's southwestern provinces, including from the Three Gorges Dam project.

Power supplies have often run behind demand in Guangdong, one of China's main export hubs.
