Sony to recall 90,000 batteries in Japan, China
The batteries to be recalled are VGP-BPS2B and VGP-BPS3A for Vaio, according to the world's second largest lithium-ion battery maker next to Sanyo Electric Co.
Although the Japanese electronics company has yet to come up with the total number of batteries to be recalled in the rest of the world, a company spokesperson who spoke on condition of anonymity gave an estimated number as 250,000 batteries used for Vaio computers globally.
The batteries to be recalled are VGP-BPS2B and VGP-BPS3A for Vaio, according to the world's second largest lithium-ion battery maker next to Sanyo Electric Co.
Sony plans to announce the date to begin its replacement programme on Nov 7.
Since the company announced the possibility of its lithium-ion batteries overheating and short-circuiting, nine cases of battery overheating have been reported.
Two incidents were reported where people were injured with minor burns, and seven cases of minor property damage caused by batteries in Apple laptops have also been filed.
Sony is expected to revise downward its earnings forecast for the year until March 2007, which is to be released on Oct 26, because of the accumulating cost of battery recalls. The company spokesperson declined to comment on the estimated total cost of the recalls.
Sony introduced lithium-ion batteries in 1991 as the first company in the world to do so.
