Sony, Samsung to boost LCD joint production

Japan's Sony Corp and Samsung Electronics Co of South Korea said on Friday that they had agreed to invest $1.9 billion to boost joint production of liquid crystal display (LCD) panels.

TOKYO: Japan's Sony Corp and Samsung Electronics Co of South Korea said on Friday that they had agreed to invest $1.9 billion to boost joint production of liquid crystal display (LCD) panels.

The joint venture, S-LCD Corp, will get the extra investment to meet growing global demand for LCD televisions, they said in a statement.

The business will build a new production line in the Tangjeong area, known as South Korea's "Crystal Valley", to make new generation amorphous thin film transistor LCD panels.

Operation of the new line is expected to start in the second quarter of 2009 with an inital production capacity of 60,000 sheets a month.

The move underscores Sony's commitment to its alliance with Samsung in parallel to its tie-up in LCD panels with Japanese rival Sharp Corp. that was announced in February in response to fierce competition in flat televisions.

Demand is booming in the flat TV market but intense price competition is forcing companies to seek ways to drive down costs.
