Sony announces 275 layoffs in Spain
Japan's Sony Corp said on Monday it is cutting 275 jobs at its factory in Spain, just days after announcing an overhaul of its operations worldwide to cope with the global economic downturn.
"Sony Spain will today present a package of measures aimed at maintaining the short-term viability of the Barcelona Technology Centre," it said.
The plan involves "the cutting of 275 jobs at its factory in Viladecavalls", near Barcelona in northeastern Spain.
The measures "are necessary to maintain production" at the factory in "a complicated economic context."
Sony announced in Japan last week it was cutting about five percent of the 160,000 workers in its global electronics business worldwide and shutting plants as part of an overhaul of its business in response to the global economic downturn.
