BEIJING: Power and transport outages due to snow have reduced coal and coke stocks at some Chinese steel mills to critical levels of less than 3 days, the China Iron and Steel Association said on Wednesday.

"At Angang Steel Co Ltd stocks are down sharply. The furnace there also provides heat to the people of Anshan city," Luo Bingsheng, secretary-general of the China Iron and Steel Association, told reporters. "If they are forced to shut altogether that will not only hurt their production but also the people of Anshan," Luo said.

"Ma'anshan Iron and Steel shipments have been disrupted by rail transport problems," Luo added. Luo protested a move by Rio Tinto to cut supplies to Chinese steel mills under term prices to 90 percent of contracted amounts as allowed by the contract.
