Softbank wins more users for 14th month in June

Softbank Corp, Japan's third-largest mobile phone carrier, won more users than its bigger rivals for the 14th straight month in June.

TOKYO: Softbank Corp, Japan's third-largest mobile phone carrier, won more users than its bigger rivals for the 14th straight month in June, adding nearly twice as many subscribers as industry leader NTT DoCoMo.

Softbank has been luring users away from rivals with quirky marketing and price cuts, forcing DoCoMo and No 2 KDDI Corp to lower their fees as well.

It is also expected to add customers with its July 11 launch of Apple Inc's iPhone.

Softbank signed up 158,900 additional subscribers on a net basis in June, while NTT DoCoMo signed up 84,200 new users and KDDI added a net 12,000 subscribers, data released by the operators showed on Monday.

KDDI was also behind fourth-ranked eAccess Ltd, which added a net 47,700 users, due to a loss of 60,400 subscribers for prepaid phones.
