Marking its 69th year, Sapporo Snow Festival is known for its elaborate snow and ice sculptures. 2018 festival was a dedication to to the legendary manga author Osamu Tezuka who would turn 90 this year.

History
First held in Odori Park in 1950, Sapporo Snow Festival started with just six snow statues made by the local high school students and attracted fifty thousand people. Soon after its success, it became a major winter event of Sapporo.

Competition
It was in 1974 that the International Snow Sculpture Contest began as a part of the Snow Festival. Since then, a number of teams from various regions of the world; including Shenyang (China), Alberta (Canada), Munich (Germany), Sydney (Australia) and Portland (U.S.A.), each of which has a close relationship with Sapporo, have been participating in the contest.

In was 1984 that this festival was extended by two days and became seven days. It is ususally held in the month of February.
