KRASNODAR: Russia began the construction of an electric power transmission line in the Caucasian Mountains to provide power to the Alpine skiing facilities for the Winter Olympic Games to be held in Sochi, 2014.

"A helicopter has begun installing the first tower of the 220 kW 60-kilometer long transmission line from Psou to Poselkovaya," said Nina Lazarenko, a spokeswoman of the Trunkline Electric Networks Company Thursday, adding the company will invest 2.9 billion rubles in the construction.

She said helicopters will be used to install 30-ton high-reliability towers in hard-of-access areas in the mountains and the line will 90 times cross roads and 60 times rivers and streams.

The construction is scheduled to be completed in October 2008.
