Russia restricts import of Norwegian fish
Russia has imposed restrictions on the import of fish from Norway for its failure to meet Russian health standards, according to media reports on Saturday.
Following visits by Russian veterinary inspectors to a dozen Norwegian fish companies, Russia's veterinary agency approved imports of fish caught in the open sea from only seven beginning on December 1, an official said.
"We are introducing a system under which fish will be delivered to Russia only by companies certified by Russian veterinarians," the official was quoted as saying.
The restrictions, which affect notably herring and mackerel, were imposed as the other factories failed to meet Russian health and technical standards, said the official.
Norway, which has more than 40 companies which export fish, sold Russia nearly 197 tonnes of fish worth 199 million dollars last year, according to the Norge-Fish analysis group.
