Russia, North Korea ready to launch rail project: Report

Russia and North Korea were ready to launch a joint project to rebuild their cross-border rail link after years of negotiatins, North Korea's state media said on Thursday.

SEOUL: Russia and North Korea were ready to launch a joint project to rebuild their cross-border rail link after years of negotiatins, North Korea's state media said on Thursday.

A Russian company would conduct its final field survey of some sections of the railways and the North's northeastern port of Rajin, the official Korean Central News Agency said.

Rajin is also referred to as Najin in South Korea. Russian oficials have visited North Korea to discuss modernising of the 55-kilometre line between Rajin and Russia's Khasan.

"The projects for the reconstruction of the Khasan-Rajin railways and the Rajin Port will be put into practice, in the near future," the agency said.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed great interest in connecting the Rajin-Khasan line to the Trans Siberian Railway.

In June, North Korea reportedly agreed to open Rajin further to foreign ships in an attempt to make it a regional transport hub.

South Korea sees the port project as an efficient alternative to renovating dilapidated rail networks running the length of North Korea and linking them to the Russian railway.

Reconstruction of North Korea's railways would cost about 2.5 billion dollars, according to Russian estimates.
