MOSCOW: In a move that can bring cheers to drivers in the country, Russia may abolish road taxes from 2011, Russia's Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov has said.

"We are working on this issue now," he said at the opening of the governmental committee on transport and communications yesterday.

The road tax "may be abolished" from 2011, he added. "This will be good news for the drivers who for some reasons use their vehicles from time to time but still have to pay the tax like those who drive every day," Ivanov said.
