Production resumes on Dubai oil rig after crash

A senior Dubai police official says production has resumed at a Persian Gulf oil rig struck by a helicopter last week.

DUBAI: A senior Dubai police official says production has resumed at a Persian Gulf oil rig struck by a helicopter last week.

Families of the five passengers and two crew believed to be aboard the helicopter have been contacted, says Brig. Gen. Abdul-Jalil Mahdi, deputy director of preventive security for Dubai police. DNA tests are being conducted to match the badly burnt bodies to the the victims' identities.

The cause of the Wednesday's accident remains under investigation. State-owned Dubai Petroleum and rig operator Petrofac initially said the helicopter struck the oil platform on takeoff, igniting a fire that temporarily halted oil production.

A Dubai Petroleum spokesman refused to comment Sunday. Petrofac representatives couldn't immediately be reached.
