Panama Canal fuel spill triggers environmental alert

PANAMA CITY: The Pacific Ocean entrance to the Panama Canal was put under environmental alert after thousands of gallons of ship's oil spilled during a routine pumping operation, Panama Maritime Authorities have said.

The fuel spill was spotted on Friday when the Italian firm Decal was pumping bunker oil from the mainland to a deposit on Taboguilla Island, some 70 km southeast of Panama City.

Decal and specialists from the clean-up firm Ocean Pollution were busy clearing up the spill, which has been contained by a half-kilometer-long boom, authorities said.

Decal spokesman Angel Solano said the clean-up would last about three days.
