Pak's first multiplex theatre to begin operations on Eid

The five-screen Cinepax multiplex was designed by Canadian architects in accordance with global standards and will be a far cry from the ageing theatres that screen films from Lollywood.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's first multiplex movie theatre in Rawalpindi is set to begin operations on Eid-ul-Fitr and the company behind it plans to develop 120 screens over five years with an investment of $30 million.

The five-screen Cinepax multiplex was designed by Canadian architects in accordance with global standards and will be a far cry from the ageing theatres that screen films from Lollywood - Pakistan's movie industry - for ever-shrinking audiences.

When Cinepax opens, local movie-lovers will be able to watch some of the biggest international hits of the past few months, including "Transformers" and "Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix".

The company behind the multiplex, also named Cinepax, plans to build complexes soon in Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Multan and Hyderabad to develop some 120 screens in five years at a total cost of USD 30 million.

The cost of a ticket at the multiplex will be Rs 200 and tickets can be booked through the internet, telephone and SMS. The theatre will screen Hollywood films within a month of their international release, said Cinepax CEO Arif Baigmohammed.

Dany Sidhwa, Cinepax's chief operating officer, said the worldwide standard for estimating market need was an average population of 54,000 people for every cinema screen but the figure for Pakistan was as high as 285,000 people per screen.
