Nokia buys multimedia company in bid to boost PC-cell link
Nokia said on Tuesday it has bought the US-based multimedia company Twango in order to help mobile phone users better organise wireless downloads and ease connections between handsets and desktop computers. The value of the deal was not announced.
“The Twango acquisition is a concrete step towards our internet services vision of providing seamless access to information, entertainment, and social networks,” said Anssi Vanjoki, general manager of Nokia’s multimedia division.
“We have the most complete suite of connected multimedia experiences including music, navigation, games, and with the Twango acquisition photos, videos, and various document types will get better.”
Twango, a privately owned company founded by former Microsoft employees, is based in Redmond, Washington. It provides a platform for organising, sharing, and republishing media such as photos, videos and audio clips. Nokia, the world’s largest mobile handset maker, said that last year it sold more than 140 million mobile devices with cameras.
It is based in Espoo near the Finnish capital, with sales in 130 countries and 68,000 employees worldwide.
