TOKYO: Nissan Motor Co said on Thursday that it had recruited Fumiko Hayashi, the former chairwoman of supermarket chain Daiei and one of the country's most successful female executives.

Hayashi will become a corporate vice president at Nissan from May 1, supporting the automaker's dealer restructuring.

Nissan said that two months later she will be assume the role of director of dealership Tokyo Nissan Auto Sales Co.

Hayashi ascended the male-dominated upper corporate ranks in Japan to become the head of the Tokyo operations of the German luxury car maker BMW before she was tapped in 2005 to turn around Daiei.

She was replaced at Daiei in March last year after a tie-up with rival supermarket operator Aeon and demoted to the role of vice chairwoman.
