Nissan, Chrysler in talks to jointly produce vehicles for North America
Nissan Motor Co and Chrysler LLC are in talks to form an alliance to supply cars to the North American market, according to a Japanese newspaper Saturday.
Nissan is seeking to supply small cars, while Chrysler wants to supply medium and large vehicles, including pickup trucks, the Nikkei said. Nissan and Chrysler are finalizing details, it said without citing sources.
``We cannot comment on the report based on speculation,'' Nissan spokeswoman Pauline Kee told reporters.
Kee added, however, Nissan was open to a potential partnership. Carlos Ghosn, who heads Japanese automaker Nissan and Renault of France, said at the Tokyo Motor Show in October he remained interested in a partnership with a major US automaker.
Speculation has been also growing that Chrysler and Ford may be looking for partners as they struggle to restructure their operations and boost profits.
Nissan, Japan's No.3 automaker, is seeking to supply its Versa compact car models, while obtaining pickup and minivan models through Chrysler, the report said.
