LOS ANGELES: Nintendo’s Wii video-game Console outsold Sony’s PlayStation 3 and Microsoft’s Xbox 360 for a ninth straight month in August, with US consumers buying 4,04,000 of the players. Microsoft’s Xbox 360 posted the only gain from July, rising 39% to 2,77,000 units following a price cut and the introduction of new games including ‘Madden NFL 08,’ NPD Group said Friday. Wii has outsold competitors since December, the Console’s first full month on store shelves.

Nintendo is forecasting sales of 16 million units worldwide this year, George Harrison, head of US marketing at the research firm, said before the numbers were released. Total sales of Console more than doubled to $302 million, NPD said.

Retailers sold 1,31,000 PS3 consoles, an 18% drop from July, NPD said. Wii sales declined 4.9% from July. Sales of Console this year through the end of August have more than doubled to $2.3 billion over the same period last year. Nintendo, based in Kyoto, Japan, also led in sales of hand-held video-game players, with its DS selling 3,83,000 units, compared with 1,51,000 units of Sony’s PSP.
