Grey skies and strong winds are disrupting Easter celebrations
As Cyclone Tam begins to ease across New Zealand, people are hoping for a peaceful Easter weekend. Although the worst of the storm is passing, forecasters say the wild weather isn’t over yet.

After days of chaos, New Zealanders can expect the heavy rain and strong winds to continue in many parts of the country over the long weekend.

Meteorologist Oscar Shiviti said while the cyclone’s intense effects would ease, the country isn’t in the clear. “It’s not looking like a good weekend... It’s a pretty rainy Easter for most of the country,” he warned.

Rain will become more off-and-on, and winds will start to die down from Friday. But the chance of thunderstorms, showers, and more gusty weather remains through Sunday and Monday. This could make it hard for families trying to plan outdoor Easter activities.

In the North Island, places like Northland, Auckland, Bay of Plenty, and Gisborne will continue to feel the cyclone on Friday, with things beginning to calm slightly by Saturday. There may be some sunny breaks.

Auckland will still see showers through the weekend, with winds and possible thunderstorms.

In Wellington, the weather will be cloudy with occasional showers, but the capital is expected to miss the worst of it.

Christchurch will see rain on Friday, but it should clear up in the afternoon. Saturday looks mostly fine, though more showers could return on Sunday and Monday as the new system moves in.

While Cyclone Tam may be on its way out, Easter in New Zealand is still looking wet, windy, and unpredictable. People are being urged to stay aware of the weather updates and drive carefully. They have also been advised to have a backup plan for any long weekend plans earlier.
