Authorities have issued warning of coastal erosion, inundation of low-lying areas, and life-threatening flash flooding. Australian Treasurer Jim Chalmers acknowledged the seriousness of the situation, stating authorities are "hoping for the best and preparing for the worst."
The cyclone's slow movement increases the risk of coastal erosion and inundation due to "dangerous and damaging waves" over the next few days, according to Australia's Bureau of Meteorology. The Bureau also warned of the potential for rivers to rise to major flood levels starting Friday when the cyclone is likely to make landfall.
“Dangerous and life-threatening flash flooding remains possible, and we could see rivers begin to rise to major flood levels from Friday.”
Chalmers described the current situation as the “calm before the storm.” He emphasized the unusual nature of this cyclone, saying, “It's rare for a cyclone to be this far south and to threaten such a huge population area.”
Weather experts predict the cyclone will cross the coast early Friday morning, bringing damaging wind gusts, storms, and heavy rainfall. Australian authorities are urging residents in southeast Queensland to prepare evacuation plans.
“It might be the most significant system for the city since 1954.” stated Acting Gold Coast mayor Donna Gates.
There are concerns about major flooding in Brisbane, with 20,000 homes at risk as the warning zone expands. New South Wales is also bracing for severe weather as the cyclone moves away from the Queensland coast. Residents have been advised to take precautions, including securing their homes and altering travel plans.
Authorities in Australia are urging Queenslanders on the state's south-east coast to formulate their evacuation plans.
