Stuart Sinclair Wilson, popularly known as Stu, a former All Blacks captain, passed away on Sunday aged 70, as confirmed by New Zealand Rugby.

During his career, Wilson represented both Wellington and New Zealand, leading the national side during their 1983 tour to Scotland and England.

Beginning his international career in 1976, he appeared in 34 test matches and scored 19 tries, achieving the distinction of being the first wing player to lead the All Blacks.


His notable achievements include participating in the 1983 series against the British and Irish Lions in New Zealand, where the All Blacks won 4-0, with Wilson securing three tries in the final test match.

"Our thoughts are with the whanau and loved ones of Stu Wilson, All Black #772, All Blacks captain, and try-scoring sensation, who passed away aged 70," All Blacks posted on X.

"Beyond his playing career, Wilson remained an influential voice in the game, contributing as a commentator and advocate for rugby, always bringing insight and passion to his analysis," the Wellington Rugby Football Union said in a statement.


Wilson represented Wellington in 89 matches from 1975 to 1984, accumulating 216 points during his tenure. Following his retirement in 1984, he became a rugby commentator, providing analysis and commentary for both television and radio broadcasts.
