Top NZ police official quits as leaders vow accountability amid criminal investigation
Deputy Commissioner Jevon McSkimming, one of New Zealand’s top-ranking cops, used his official computer to store pornographic material. He was forced to resign on Monday (May 12) after mounting pressure and a criminal investigation into his alleged misconduct.

“Objectionable material,” including pornographic images and videos, was found on his work computer. The content was serious enough to have triggered a criminal investigation and high-level political intervention.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon refused to comment directly when he was asked about the matter. “I am aware of the issue,” he said, “but I will not comment on it while the investigation is ongoing.”

Police Commissioner Andre Coster, who is attending a police conference in Dubai, said, “I have always made it very clear that trust and confidence in the police is a top priority for me.”

He acknowledged the gravity of the situation but said he could not comment further without compromising the investigation.

“I expect leadership to be accountable,” Coster added. “The public and my police colleagues can rest assured that very much remains the case.”

Police Minister Mark Mitchell revealed McSkimming had resigned before formal dismissal proceedings could be completed. He said, “I instructed the Public Service Commission to commence the process to remove Mr McSkimming from office after allegations of a very serious nature recently came to light, separate to the investigation that led to him being suspended.”

“The Policing Act is very clear: A Deputy Commissioner of Police must be a ‘fit and proper’ person,” he added. “This new information called into serious question Mr McSkimming’s fitness for office.”

At a quiet rural property in Te Horo, which McSkimming owns and once lived in, no one answered the door on Tuesday. His lawyer, Linda Clark, has been approached for comment but has not responded.

A former police colleague, speaking anonymously, described McSkimming as “once seen as a future commissioner” and said, “It’s incredibly sad. We need to rebuild trust now.”

The case remains open, with police urging patience while inquiries continue.
