Qantas launches 48-hour sale: $509 NZ-Australia return flight fare

Australia’s flag bearer and its largest airline, Qantas, is giving Kiwis a chance to escape the cold and unpredictable weather with a limited-time deal on flights to Australia. The airline has launched a 48-hour “flash sale” offering return economy fares starting from just $509. The sale, which began Thursday afternoon, runs until 11:59 p.m. on Friday (May 2), unless seats sell out earlier.

Flights are available to popular Australian cities, including Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth. Travellers can also fly out of Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Queenstown. The discounted fares are valid for travel from May 14, 2024, to March 31, 2026, although some blackout dates apply, and not all flights may have sale fares.

Qantas said the promotion gives New Zealanders “incredible savings on flights to top Australian destinations” — perfect for visiting family and friends or a sunny getaway during the Kiwi winter.


The sale includes Qantas’ full-service benefits—all economy tickets include meals, drinks, and checked baggage.

Travellers looking for more comfort can also grab premium economy return fares for $999 on the Auckland–Brisbane route. Starting in August 2025, the Boeing 787 Dreamliner will soon operate these flights. This will be the second trans-Tasman route the Dreamliner serves, after the Auckland–Sydney QF3 and QF4 services.

Travel experts recommend booking quickly, as sale fares are limited and may go fast. Tickets can be booked directly through the Qantas website or via travel agents.
