Police received notification about the water incident in Patea just before 10.15 am NZST that the vessel had overturned. Detective Sergeant Chris Allemann confirmed that two people died and a third individual was rescued and taken to the hospital.
Emergency services responded swiftly. St John deployed an ambulance, a manager, and a helicopter. Coastguard units from South Taranaki and Whanganui joined the effort, along with crews from Fire and Emergency NZ stationed in Pātea and Waverley.
The bodies of the two deceased were recovered by 11.30 am. The survivor, treated at the scene, was transported to the hospital in stable condition.
Detective Sergeant Allemann said investigations into the cause of the capsize are ongoing. At this stage, authorities do not believe there is any suspicious circumstance.
The incident remains under active investigation. Rescue and recovery teams continue to assess the site and collect evidence. Authorities urge anyone with information or witnesses to contact local police.
This tragedy follows historical accidents in the area, including a 2012 capsizing event near Pātea's entrance where two men survived after their boat submerged, but this marks the first fatal sand bar incident in recent memory.
Residents described dangerous conditions typical of the Pātea bar, where shifting sandbanks and currents can become hazardous.
