Turkmenistan is poised to ease travel restrictions with a new e-visa system, potentially opening its doors to more international visitors by eliminating the cumbersome invitation letter requirement. This policy shift aims to diversify the economy,...

The move marks a rare shift in policy for a nation often listed among the world’s most closed and authoritarian regimes. The proposed changes would eliminate this requirement, allowing travelers to apply online through a simplified system.
The country, which heavily relies on its natural gas exports, through this initiative is seeking to diversify its economy and strengthen regional ties. In a landmark development in early 2025, Turkmenistan began exporting natural gas to Turkey through a swap deal that bypasses Russia, signaling a new direction in its foreign policy and trade strategy.
Turkmenistan is home to several unique attractions, most famously the Darvaza gas crater, also known as the "Door to Hell." This massive, fiery sinkhole in the middle of the Karakum Desert has been burning continuously since 1971 and has long fascinated the few tourists who managed to enter the country.
Officials hope to see a boost in visitor numbers, providing an economic boost and showcasing the country’s natural and cultural landmarks.
While no official launch date for the new e-visa platform has been announced, sources indicate the process is advancing rapidly, with implementation likely within the year.
