New Zealand weather on Christmas Day: Forecasters predict mixed bag - A mix of sun, showers, and strong winds

Christmas Day in New Zealand is set to bring a mix of weather, with forecasters predicting a combination of sun, showers, and strong winds across the country. While some regions may enjoy periods of sunshine, others can expect heavy rain and gusty conditions, making planning outdoor activities a bit tricky. Temperatures are expected to remain warm in many areas, adding a touch of summer heat to the holiday. Residents and visitors are advised to stay updated with local forecasts and prepare for changing conditions, especially if traveling or attending outdoor events on December 25.


According to MetService meteorologist Dan Corrigan, as reported by RNZ, much of New Zealand can expect 'good barbecue weather' this Christmas. Warm conditions are forecast from Wellington to Waikato and Hawke’s Bay, which recently saw extreme heat, with Hastings reaching 33.4°C on Tuesday. While temperatures will remain warm over the holiday, they are expected to be slightly lower than earlier in the week, staying in the high 20s. A heat alert has been issued for Napier and Hastings, with residents urged to take precautions outdoors. Wellington will enjoy warm weather on Christmas, though residents should expect the city’s typical breezy conditions.


In the South Island, Christchurch is forecast to be the warmest southern city, with a high of 26°C, while Nelson and Marlborough are also set for pleasant, warm conditions, reported RNZ. Further south, colder air over the lower South Island will bring cooler temperatures, with Queenstown expected to reach a high of just 16°C - about 10°C lower than Christchurch - highlighting the contrast in holiday weather across the region.

RAIN ON THE CARDS?

According to RNZ, Corrigan also noted that a band of rain in the far north could bring persistent showers to areas like Kaitaia and the Bay of Islands. Earlier forecasts suggested this rain might reach Auckland, but that now seems unlikely. If rain does occur in Auckland on Christmas, there will likely be brief showers later in the day. The wettest conditions are expected along the West Coast and the Southern Alps, while Otago and Southland further south may see occasional rain showers.
