He was known for his dedication to motorsport safety and generosity, and spent decades ensuring the protection of drivers and spectators at Auckland’s famed dirt track. His sudden death, described by friends as a "freak accident," has shocked the motorsport community.
Jason Jones, of the Western Springs Speedway Association, called Barry “one of my best friends,” reflecting on more than 30 years of shared memories. “Kevin was always a straight-up guy,” Jones said. “He never shied away from standing up for what was right. He had a giant heart, especially when it came to his family.”
Barry was instrumental in responding to hundreds of on-track incidents over the years, including some of the most serious crashes in the speedway’s history. His calm presence and experience made him a significant member of the Speedway’s operations.
Motul New Zealand paid tribute on Facebook, calling Barry “a true passionate motorsport petrolhead who dedicated everything to the sport and the success of others.” R&R Powersports echoed those sentiments, saying he “will always have a special place in our hearts.”
Barry’s family described him as “our number one supporter” and said his kindness often came at a personal cost. “He was so generous that he often left himself with very little in return.”
A Givealittle page has been set up to help cover funeral expenses and support his loved ones during this difficult time. The page reads: “Kevin was a kind, hardworking soul who brought light and laughter to everyone who knew him.”
