Sarie Morton, a student at Matamata College (New Zealand), died Wednesday afternoon after being struck by a train near the intersection of Firth St and College St in Waikato. Her school mourned her tragic death in a Facebook post on Thursday by Matamata College board presiding member Craig Alexander and principal Dr Angela Sharples.

"It is with deep sadness that we inform our school community of the sudden passing of one of our beloved students, Sarie Morton, following an incident after school yesterday. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Sarie’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time," the post read.

KiwiRail is providing support to the train driver involved.


Emergency services responded to the incident around 3:15 pm local time on Wednesday, but Sarie died at the scene of the accident.

The school will remain open Thursday and Friday to provide support for those affected by the tragedy. Professional support services are available to anyone who needs them.

"As we navigate this sudden loss, we are deeply grateful for the outpouring of love and support from our community. Your kindness and compassion are greatly appreciated by Sarie's family, friends, and all of us here at Matamata College."

Police are investigating the incident on behalf of the coroner, and WorkSafe has been notified. KiwiRail executive general manager Paul Ashton released a statement expressing condolences and confirming support for the train driver, who is now on leave.

"KiwiRail’s thoughts are with the victim’s family, friends and her community. We thank the first responders and others who provided assistance at the scene."

Ashton emphasized the dangers of railway corridors and urged the public to exercise caution. He highlighted the importance of using designated crossings.

The incident occurred near the intersection of Firth St and College St, adjacent to the railway tracks. The exact circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.
