Incredibly rare king penguin spotted on Otago Peninsula Beach

A king penguin made a surprise appearance at Pipikaretu Beach on the Otago Peninsula, delighting a group of eco-tourists and conservation staff. They called it a “once in a lifetime opportunity.”

The king penguin is the second-largest penguin species in the world, known for their orange markings and graceful stature. They are native to sub-Antarctic islands and rarely venture as far north as New Zealand.

Alliance director Jerad Haldan confirmed the sighting, calling it “incredibly rare,” with fewer than 10 sightings of king penguins ever reported in New Zealand.


“It’s a great reminder that you never quite know what you’ll see when you're out watching wildlife. This is now the second season in a row where we’ve seen some of the world’s rarest penguins appear here,” said Haldan.

The Otago Peninsula is popular for its thriving populations of the endangered hoiho (yellow-eyed penguins) and kororā (little blue penguins). The king penguin, second in size only to the emperor penguin, is a far less common visitor to these shores.

The penguin stayed almost 20 minutes on the beach before heading back to the ocean, which was described as a "casual visit."

In astonishment, the tour participants quickly grabbed binoculars and cameras to record the experience. "The group was ecstatic," Haldan remarked. "It was an unforgettable experience for our staff as well as the guests."

Prior to this, the most recent sighting of a king penguin in New Zealand was at Ōreti Beach in 2024.
