The upper reaches of the North Island are bracing for a bout of wild weather as Tropical Cyclone Tam edges closer.

While the storm is predicted to lose some of its punch as it transitions into an ex-tropical cyclone over cooler waters, its impact will still be significant, bringing the threat of severe winds and torrential rainfall to the region.

The Auckland Harbour Bridge, a vital artery for the city, is facing a particularly challenging period. The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) has issued urgent warnings to motorists, urging extreme caution and preparedness for potential disruptions throughout the week.

Starting from 7 am today, April 16, wind gusts across the iconic structure are expected to reach a turbulent 75-85 kilometers per hour.

This has triggered an amber alert, meaning commuters should anticipate reduced speed limits and the possibility of lane closures implemented at short notice to ensure safety.

The turbulent conditions are not expected to be short-lived. The current forecast indicates that these strong winds will persist for a lengthy 40-hour period. Adding to the concern, Friday is shaping up to be potentially more severe, with wind gusts predicted to be even stronger. This raises the distinct possibility of a red alert being issued.

Under a red alert, the NZTA may have no option but to take the drastic measure of closing all lanes of the Auckland Harbour Bridge to safeguard road users from the hazardous conditions.

For drivers of high-sided vehicles and motorcyclists, the message is clear: avoid the Auckland Harbour Bridge entirely. The NZTA strongly advises these vulnerable vehicle types to utilize the western ring route, via State Highways 16 and 18, as a safer alternative during this period of heightened wind risk.

Throughout this weather event, the Auckland Harbour Bridge will operate in a 4x4 lane configuration, a measure designed to enhance stability in windy conditions.

The NZTA understands the potential inconvenience these disruptions may cause and expresses its gratitude to the public for their patience and cooperation as they prioritize the safety of all road users.
