New York Council says big stores must recycle plastic bags

Large stores throughout the city must provide bins for recycling plastic bags under a bill passed by the City Council.

NEW YORK:Large stores throughout the city must provide bins for recycling plastic bags under a bill passed by the City Council.

New York did not go as far as some cities that have banned the bags, including San Francisco and Oakland, California.

Environmentalists estimate Americans throw away 100 billion plastic bags each year. The nonrenewable bags take up space in waterways and landfills and are thought to be a particular environmental burden because of the resources needed to make them.

The City Council measure requires stores that occupy 5,000 or more square feet or have more than five branches in the city to install plastic bag recycling bins.

The stores also must use bags that read on the side: "Please return this bag to a participating store for recycling."

Mayor Michael Bloomberg supports the measure, a spokesman said.

Stores will be required to report to the city on the number and weight of bags that are collected.
