KATHMANDU: Nepal's government has decided to add 18 different festivals of various religions and communities, including Christmas and Eid, into its list of national holidays.

A cabinet meeting yesterday decided to observe 18 different festivals as public holidays, a cabinet source said.

The festivals include Eid and Bakr Eid, Christmas, Guru Nanak Day, Udhouli and Ubhouli, Goura and the Tamu and Sonam Lhosars.

In the meantime, the government decided to cut three holidays from the nine-day holiday observed during the Hindu Dashain festival.

The cabinet also endorsed the government's recent agreement with the Federal Republican National Front, an alliance of ethnic groups in the Terai region.

Under the agreement, the government has expressed its commitment to declare Nepal a federal democratic republic and provide compensation to the family members of those killed during the Madhesi movement last year.
