Munich airport to begin work on third runway in 2009

Munich airport plans to begin building a third runway next year to help cope with growing passenger traffic, managing director Michael Kerkloh said Wednesday in the German daily Handelsblatt.

FRANKFURT: Munich airport plans to begin building a third runway next year to help cope with growing passenger traffic, managing director Michael Kerkloh said Wednesday in the German daily Handelsblatt.

"We urgently need the third runway," Kerkloh said. "There are fewer and fewer time slots to fulfil airlines' requests for additional takeoff and landing opportunities."

A third runway would increase from 2011 the maximum number of take-offs and landings per hour to 120 from 90 now, Handelsblatt said.

The southern state of Bavaria started a process approval procedure in November for the runway construction, a project opposed by communities in and near the planned flight path.

Last year, the airport posted a 10.4 per cent increase to 34 million in the number of passengers it handled, though it expected growth to slow to about five percent this year.

"Without the third runway, the limit will be reached at 40 million passengers," Kerkloh said.
