SCHAUMBURG: Cell phone maker Motorola Inc, which recently settled a proxy battle with activist investor Carl Icahn, said Wednesday it named former AT&T chief executive David Dorman as non-executive chairman.

Dorman succeeds Ed Zander, current Motorola chairman and former CEO, who will retire as planned at the company's annual shareholders meeting May 5.

Dorman, 54, joined Motorola's board in 2006. Beginning his telecom career at Sprint in 1980, he previously served as AT&T president, chairman and CEO, and as an executive vice president of SBC, among other appointments.

Dorman is currently a managing director and senior adviser at Warburg Pincus and Co and serves on the boards of CVS, Yum Brands Inc and the Georgia Tech Foundation.
