Moscow opens rail link to flagship airport

MOSCOW: Russian officials on Tuesday unveiled the first direct rail link from Moscow to the capital's flagship Sheremetyevo Airport, hailing it as a breakthrough for long-suffering travellers.

"Millions of Russians won't have to waste hours of their time and wear down their nerves in the traffic," said Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov at the opening of the airport's new glass rail terminal.

The route will also serve the airport's new Terminal 3, which is due for completion in February 2009 to replace the much-maligned Terminal 2 that was designed by Soviet planners to serve the 1980 Olympic Games.

All of Moscow's main airports now have rail links to the city centre -- enabling foreign travellers to avoid notoriously expensive airport taxis and rush-hour gridlock.
