Mitsubishi to enter Russian power plant mkt: report

Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd plans to enter the market for power plant facilities in Russia under a tie-up with conglomerate Renova Group, a newspaper said on Wednesday.

TOKYO: Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd plans to enter the market for power plant facilities in Russia under a tie-up with conglomerate Renova Group, a newspaper said on Wednesday.

The partnership, which is expected to be announced within the next few days, will make Mitsubishi Heavy the first Japanese heavy electric machinery manufacturer to enter the Russian power systems market, the Nikkei daily said.

Under the plan, Mitsubishi will transfer its latest gas turbine technology to Ural Turbine Works, a unit of the Renova Group, the report said, without revealing its sources.

Ural Turbine intends to double or triple output capacity from five turbines a year currently.

If Mitsubishi wins contracts for fossil-fuel power plants in Russia and former Soviet Union states, Ural Turbine will build the equipment, it said, adding that key components such as turbine blades would be shipped from Japan.

A Mitsubishi Heavy spokesman declined to comment on the report. Russia's state-run utility Unified Energy System plans to invest about 56 billion dollars by 2010 in power systems, with 133 gas turbines and 146 steam turbines expected to be introduced, the Nikkei reported.
