Merkel gets warm welcome at Israeli parliament

Israel's parliament has literally rolled out the red carpet for visiting German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

JERUSALEM: Israel's parliament has literally rolled out the red carpet for visiting German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Merkel is being welcomed by an honor guard and Israeli leaders outside the parliament building. Later Tuesday, she is to deliver the first address to the parliament by a visiting head of government. That honor is usually reserved for monarchs, presidents and other heads of state.

Merkel's visit has helped cement warm ties between the countries six decades after the Nazi Holocaust. Despite the government's royal treatment of Merkel, the Israeli public has shown little interest in the visit.
