Malaysia bans import of plastic wastes

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia today said it will enforce a ban on import of plastic wastes into the country for five years beginning October in an effort to protect the environment.
The ban is to ensure that Malaysia would not be the destination for cleaning and processing other countries' contaminated waste, Minister of International Trade and Industry Rafdah Aziz said. The ban would be in force for five years and will be reviewed a year later, she added.
The import of unclean and chemically contaminated plastic waste for processing has the potential to damage the environment due to unwanted contaminants such as residual pesticide and soil, national news agency Bernama quoted her as saying.
