FRANKFURT: German airline Lufthansa carried 8.5 percent more passengers in April than a year ago as it increased the number of flights on offer but its aircraft were less full, figures showed on Tuesday.

In April, it carried 5.0 million passengers on just over 57,700 flights, an increase of 10.2 percent, but its passenger load factor, a guage of how full its aircraft are, fell 1.2 percentage points to 77.7 percent.

Including Swiss International Air Lines, the remnants of the bankrupt Swissair which Lufthansa bought last year, the number of passengers rose 33 percent to 6.2 million while the load factor fell 0.6 points to 78.3 percent.
