Lufthansa cabin staff union UFO votes to strike

Deutsche Lufthansa AG cabin staff voted on Monday to go on strike in an effort to secure more pay and better working conditions, their union said.

FRANKFURT: Deutsche Lufthansa AG cabin staff voted on Monday to go on strike in an effort to secure more pay and better working conditions, their union said.

The UFO union, which represents some 16,000 cabin attendants, said it planned to hold strikes for several hours at short notice, but not for long periods.

The union already staged warning strikes over the pay issue for two days in January, forcing the cancellation of more than 100 flights. New strikes were supported by 96 percent of those voting, the union said.

The union is seeking an increase of 6.1 percent for 14 months and improved benefits. The airline has offered 3.4 percent, according to the union.

The union lowered its initial demand of 15 percent in light of the economic situation.

Lufthansa spokeswoman Claudia Lange said after the vote that the airline was still hoping for a solution to the issue, and that both sides were in regular contact, but that a date hadn't been set to negotiate further.

``We ask that UFO returns to the negotiating table to conclude the conflict there,'' Lange said.

Lufthansa shares were down 1.7 percent at euro7.81 ($9.84) in Frankfurt afternoon trading.
