To augment supplies to Jaffna region, Sri Lankan government has increased the number of ships ferrying material to the battle ravaged peninsula from two to ten.

COLOMBO: To augment supplies to Jaffna region, Sri Lankan government has increased the number of ships ferrying material to the battle ravaged peninsula from two to ten.

At the beginning there were only two ships for transporting goods to Jaffna and now it has expanded to ten, an official statement said here

A shipload containing food, dry rations, asbestos sheets, cement and textbooks would leave Colombo harbour soon.

The goods were loaded on Friday under the inspection of the Deputy Commissioner and head of Tamil section, Educational Publication Department- Lenin Madivanam and the Deputy Commissioner of Essential Services H.S. Ratnakeerthi.

The first stock of Tamil medium textbooks was sent to Jaffna in December and the second stock was sent for the new term. As much as 575 metric tonnes of textbooks, 400 mt of food items, 600 mt of asbestos sheets and cement and other essential items will be handed over to the Government Agent of Jaffna.

School textbooks will be handed over to the Department of Education office in Jaffna.

With the road link to Jaffan being closed since August 2006 due to security reasons, the sea route was used to transport goods to Jaffna.

Ships carrying essential goods are sent to Jaffna twice a month and take 25 day to reach their destination.
