Judgement day for Rajat Gupta: Stiff sentence or leniency?

Rajat Gupta receives his sentence today. He was arrested a year ago on charges of leaking insider info to hedge-fund manager Raj Rajratnam, and pronounced guilty on four counts in June.

The Case for a Stiff Sentence

PREET BHARARA, US Attorney Who Prosecuted Gupta: “Any time a company insider discloses corporate secrets…it undermines public’s confi dence in integrity of fi nancial markets. When it is someone of Gupta’s stature, the damage is magnifi ed.”

KENNETH LEHRER, a Former Professor in a Letter to Judge Rakoff: “Granting Mr. Gupta a very light or reduced sentence for his despicable actions, would not truly balance the scales for America.”

The Case for Leniency

BILL GATES: “I know most personally that the poor of the world have a profoundly capable & articulate advocate in Rajat Gupta.”
