TOKYO: Japan's Matsushita Electric Industrial Co is to change its name to Panasonic, its best known brand overseas, to increase its international recognition, a public broadcaster reported on Thursday.

Matsushita was expected to announce the decision to abandon the name of its founder at a press conference later in the day.

Matsushita, founded by entrepreneur Konosuke Matsushita in 1918 in the western city of Osaka, also makes products under other brands including National, which it first attached to bicycle lamps in 1927.

The company has used the National brand in Japan only, mainly for home appliances such as washing machines and refrigerators. It introduced the Panasonic brand for international markets in 1955.

The company declined to comment on the reports.
