Israel plans over 1,000 East Jerusalem, West Bank apartments
Israel will push ahead with the construction of more than a thousand houses in East Jerusalem and the West Bank, the Army Radio has reported.
The Jewish state is planning to construct 500 apartments in the neighbourhood of Har Homa and another 240 in Ma'aleh Adumim as part of its 2008 budget, the report said.
This is in addition to an earlier announcement made by Israel regarding the construction of about 300 apartments in Har Homa, which had raised eyebrows and condemnation from the United States saying "it would not help efforts to reach a peace deal".
"No promise was ever given to anyone that we wouldn't continue to build in Har Homa, because it's within the municipal borders of Jerusalem," Minister of Jerusalem Affairs, Rafi Eitan told Army Radio, claiming that the neighbourhood alongwith Ma'aleh Adumim is an integral part of Jerusalem.
Israel intends to hold on to Ma'aleh Adumim, home to more than 30,000 settlers, in any final peace deal with the Palestinians.
The popular radio station quoted sources in the Ministry of Housing as saying that Israel would wait for "a convenient timing, which will not raise a wave of international protest".
