Indian, SA businesses urged to collaborate

Business leaders from India and South Africa should interact on a greater scale to forge joint partnerships in infrastructure, energy, BPO and other fields, the Deputy President of the African nation said on Thursday.

DURBAN: Business leaders from India and South Africa should interact on a greater scale to forge joint partnerships in infrastructure, energy, BPO and other fields, the Deputy President of the African nation said on Thursday.

South Africa and India enjoyed a strong bond of friendship and the business leaders should utilise the growing relationship to the benefit of both countries, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka said at the opening ceremony of a three-day business seminar, "India Calling", in Johannesburg.

Minister of State for Industry Ashwani Kumar and Minister of Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi, along with over 200 Indian business leaders, are attending the conference, organised jointly by the Indian Merchants Chamber and Business Unity South Africa.

Mlambo-Ngcuka called on the business leaders to discuss the prospects of joint partnerships in fields like logistics, roads, banking and investment, pharmaceutical, healthcare and biotechnology as also mining and diamond industry.

"We envision an economic trade between our two countries where both are not only engaged in large-scale investment but do trade in a meaningfully mutual and beneficial fashion."

"I am sure when the 7th Joint Ministerial Commission takes place in South Africa in November this year, numerous matters which have as yet not lent themselves to some solution between our two nations will be successfully concluded."
