NEW DELHI: India on Tuesday sought enhanced Japanese investment in infrastructure sector based on public-private partnership (PPP) model.
"Japan ought to be looking at India as it represents an attractive opportunity. India is an investment country and a consuming society," Economic Affairs Secretary D Subbarao said at a conference in Tokyo on Tuesday.
The conference was organised by CII in partnership with the Union Government and India Brand Equity Foundation, a CII release said here.
On this occasion, Civil Aviation Secretary Ashok Chawla referred to the boom in the country's aviation sector with the increasing number of new airlines flying over India skies.
He added the Airport Economic Regulatory Authority Bill, recently approved by Cabinet, is expected to provide an iron-clad framework for airport development regulatory environment in India.
Railway Board Chairman J P Batra told Japanese investors an investment of 7.7 billion dollars was being planned to boost railway infrastructure over the next five years.
However, the total investment needs were around 56 billion dollars. Of this, the railways expect to mobilise nearly 15 billion dollars through debt and PPP.
Japanese Vice Minister for International Affairs, Toshiaki Kitamura said Japan was engaged in developing hardware and software for Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor and would study the PPP model in India to support Japanese companies' investment in core sector projects.
