InBev raises Anheuser bid to $50 bn

NEW YORK/DUBLIN: InBev raised its takeover offer for Anheuser-Busch by $3.6 billion to $49.9 billion, and the two brewers are now discussing a possible merger, a person with knowledge of the talks said. Discussions over the $70-a-share bid may still fall through, said the person, who asked not to be identified because the negotiations arent public.

InBevs increased bid may end a month of opposition from the St. Louis-based beermaker, which said InBevs first proposal of $65 a share was inadequate. The two brewers brought their fight into court last month, and the new talks might help avert a prolonged legal fight. Negotiating is probably the best option for both parties, said Nikolaas Faes, an analyst at Exane BNP Paribas with a neutral rating on InBev.

W Randolph Baker, Anheuser-Buschs chief financial officer, said in an e-mailed statement the companys policy is not to comment on rumours. A takeover of Anheuser would give Leuven, Belgium-based InBev control of the 132-year-old Budweiser brand, which it would sell alongside Stella Artois lager and Bass ale.
