The director general of the IMF called Saturday for a "serious" response to an expected severe slowdown in the United States, and encouraged fiscal stimulus programmes in some countries.

DAVOS: The director general of the IMF called Saturday for a "serious" response to an expected severe slowdown in the United States, and encouraged fiscal stimulus programmes in some countries.

"Whatever the answer is on a recession, what is clear is there will be a serious slowdown in the US and it needs a serious response," Dominique Strauss Kahn said.

The head of the International Monetary Fund was speaking in the Swiss ski resort of Davos where the World Economic Forum is meeting.
