BARCELONA: Hundreds of people marched here Wednesday to protest plans by Japanese automaker Nissan to cut 1,680 jobs at its Barcelona plant in response to falling demand around the world.
Unions at the march called on the government in the northeastern region of Catalonia to negotiate with Nissan and prevent the automaker from going ahead with the layoffs, which the company announced on October 13.
One UGT representative, Jordi Carmona, charged Nissan only wants to "exploit this current (financial) situation... to lay off workers."
Police estimated the number of demonstrators at 1,300, while unions said around 2,000 took part in the march Wednesday evening.
Earlier Wednesday, Industry Minister Miguel Sebastian told parliament his department is in talks with Nissan to produce the automaker's new electric car in Catalonia.
Nissan, in which France's Renault holds a controlling stake, is Japan's third-largest automaker and currently employs 6,100 people in Spain.
