Hong Kong's unemployment rate rises to 3.4 per cent

HONG KONG: Hong Kong's unemployment rate for the three months to March rose slightly to 3.4 per cent compared to the previous period, official figures showed on Thursday.

The figure, slightly up on December to February where it stood at a 10-year low of 3.3 percent, rose because of a reduction in activity after the Lunar New Year holiday, the Census and Statistics Department said in a statement.

Total employment reduced by around 6,400 to 3.54 million during the period, showing the city's economy remains robust, the department said. The labour force increased by around 600 to 3.65 million during the same period.

The unemployment rate increased among decorators and maintenance workers, as well as those working in restaurants, the figures said.

Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, secretary for labour and welfare, said, the government would continue to monitor the situation in light of a US economic slowdown and market volatility.

He said they would also support employment services across the southern Chinese territory in an effort to boost the figures.
